Our territory on this side of Indianapolis runs through Southport, Beech Grove, Perry Township, and Franklin Township, all of it inside 15 to 25 minutes of our shop on US 31 in Whiteland, with Southport sitting roughly at the halfway point on the drive downtown. That's the honest pitch: we're a south side specialist, not a downtown outfit that lists these neighborhoods to look bigger. Beech Grove is its own independent city inside Marion County, about 14,700 people who grew up around the Big Four Railroad shops that opened in 1907, and it kept that "excluded city" status when Unigov formed. Southport, platted in 1849 and incorporated in 1853, is smaller still at roughly 2,100 people, bordered by Buck Creek, Stop 11 Road, McFarland Road, and Madison Avenue, mostly single-family homes from the late 20th century with some genuinely historic houses mixed in.

Perry Township, which wraps both of those small cities along with Glenns Valley, University Heights, Edgewood, and Homecroft, nearly tripled in population between 1950 and 1970, and has seen major Burmese-Chin resettlement since the 1990s, one of the more diverse pockets on this side of the county. Franklin Township, to the east, covers about 42 square miles, roughly a tenth of Marion County's land, and its population has surged more than 200 percent in recent decades. New construction keeps landing there too, a Kroger near Southport and Franklin roads and an ACE Hardware development that broke ground in March 2023. Put together, this slice of the south side is a mix of older railroad-town housing that needs real cleanouts and fast-growing new subdivisions filling up moving trucks and garages at the same time.

Why the city's own program isn't enough

Indianapolis switched its heavy trash hauler to LRS, and the program still works the same basic way: one pickup a month, tied to your district, and a hard cap of 2 bulky items per pickup. Everything has to hit the curb by 6 a.m., spaced 3 feet apart, away from mailboxes and parked cars. The refusal list is long: paint, motor oil, pesticides, propane tanks, batteries, drywall, concrete, bricks, shingles, lumber, tires, electronics, wet mattresses, auto parts, dirt, and gravel are all turned away, and refrigerators need certified Freon removal with the doors detached before crews will touch them. For a real cleanout, an estate, a move, a flooded basement, 2 items a month doesn't come close.

We won't pretend this is an open field. It's the most competitive area we serve, with national franchises like Junk King and The Junkluggers running Greenwood-area location pages, plus local operators like Better Half Hauling, Indy Trash Guy, ABC Junk, Schott Services, and Hoosier Junk Daddy all working this same market. What sets us apart isn't a bigger fleet, it's proximity. Whiteland is 20 minutes down US 31, closer to Southport and Beech Grove than most of Indy's own downtown-based crews, and Greenwood, in neighboring Johnson County, is right at the edge of this territory, a county that added over 3,200 residents in 2025 alone, more growth pressure feeding straight into these same south side neighborhoods.
